I have been in love with Mary J. Blige since I was a teenager….yep, all the way back to 1992! I was introduced to “Real Love” by Mary J. around the same time I met my first boyfriend. I sang “Real Love” day and night. Unlike MJB’s “Real Love,” which hit record numbers and really took off, my real love was only puppy love and made a disappearing act after just a year and a half.
Naturally, I was super ecstatic to be given the opportunity to receive Mary J. Blige’s first-ever Christmas album, “A Mary Christmas,” free of charge, for review purposes. I received a personally autographed CD, along with an exclusive super-cool tote bag and a “A Mary Christmas Zine Pack, that is, the CD and a 64-page booklet, compliments of Verve Music Group. I loaded the CD into my car’s CD player and began my Christmas journey with Mary J. I had Em and J in the car with me and instantly I could feel the energy in the car loosen up. J began to recognize each song and started singing along, which surprised me a bit considering all he listens to is loud unintelligible music. Em loves to dance and began doing so in her car-seat while moving her head to the groove of the tunes.
Mary J.’s soulful tunes carry through the album like a chorus line, never skipping a beat. Her take on songs like “Little Drummer Boy” and “Do You Hear What I Hear” are heart-warming to say the least.
My favorite song by far was “Noche de Paz,” a duet with Marc Anthony. The combination of English and Spanish lyrics was fantastic. The smooth balance and exchange between Mary J. and Marc was a pairing made in music heaven. Another favorite quickly became “When You Wish Upon A Star,” a duet with the fabulous Barbra Streisand. With my love of Mary J., the addition of Barbra Streisand made my day complete. My mom was a huge Streisand fan and listening to them brought back so many fond memories.
One song that took me by surprise was “When You Wish Upon A Star.” I know what you’re thinking: “Hey, that’s not a Christmas song!” Guess what? Mary J. sure knows how to make it sound like a Christmas song. Don’t believe me? I double dare you to buy the “A Mary Christmas” CD and listen to it first hand.
I can’t wait to bring the baby home and play this magical music for her. No need for classical music when you have Mary J. on your playlist. The whole album collection was outstanding. The music was warm and loving and soft tuned for the whole family to enjoy.
For all the MJB fans like myself, this album is a must-add to your music collection! Holiday song lovers will thank you for it. You can buy the “A Mary Christmas” CD by visiting the Mary J Blige website here. Also available is the “A Mary Christmas” Zine Pack available exclusively in stores.
